Buying gold on this auspicious day has become a traditional exercise for the majority of Indians as Dhanteras is considered favourable for buying the yellow metal.
As you are all aware, Diwali is around the corner, and this festival of lights begins with Dhanteras, which marks the beginning of the 5-day festival.
On Dhanteras, it is believed that Goddess Laxmi enters our homes, and therefore, Goddess Laxmi and Lord Kuber are worshipped in the homes, and gold, gold coins, silver, digital currency, or any other asset such as property, vehicle, etc., is purchased and a pooja is performed at our homes. It is rightly said that buying gold, and silver on this day is considered truly auspicious and it brings prosperity and happiness to our homes.
There is a particular time known as the shubh muhurat to buy gold on this day. The jewellery shops are mostly overcrowded with people who desire to buy gold, and therefore, the goldsmiths open the shops early in the morning and keep them open until late at night only on this special day. Dhanteras is not only about buying gold, but people also tend to buy silver and other assets such as a home, vehicle, land etc.
There are a couple of stories on why buying gold is associated with Dhanteras. The legend of how the prince was saved by his new wedded bride from death inspired the tradition of buying gold on the day of Dhanteras. A gold coin is kept in puja on Dhanteras and a lamp known as Yama Deep is also lit in front of the main door of the house to seek the blessings of Lord Yama and Goddess Lakshmi.
